Registering a Birth in Taiwan

Information on how to register the birth of a new baby in Taiwan...

Birth certificates are issued at the hospital or medical institution where the birth takes place. It is possible to ask for the certificate to be issued in both Chinese and English.

Foreigners can register a birth free of charge at a local police station. The registration should be done immediately. The following documents are needed:

  • Passport of the parent or guardian who is registering the birth
  • The original and one copy of the birth certificate
  • A completed application form

Parents must also apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) for the child. To do this they must provide the birth certificate and their own ARCs; a fee must be paid.

If one parent is Taiwanese the birth can be registered at the Civil Administration Office local to the Taiwanese parent. The birth certificate and the Taiwanese parent's household registration will be needed; the person registering the birth also needs to show valid identification.
