Child Safety

Information on child security in towns and cities and safety requirements when travelling with children in a car...

Children under the age of ten may not travel in the front seat of a car. Children under ten (or shorter than 135cm and lighter than 36 Kg) must travel in an appropriate child seat fitted to the back seat. The baby or child must face the driver's direction. A driver may be fined if children are not transported in this way.

Kidnapping is not common in either rural or urban Turkey and happens only rarely. However, parents are advised not to leave their children unattended in crowded places.

The Child Safety Unit of the General Directorate of Security (Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü) provides security and safety services for children from birth to 18 years of age. Members are trained in child developmental and behavioural sciences, interview techniques and communication skills.
