Registering the Birth

Understand how to register the birth of a new child and whether a child born in Turkey is eligible for Turkish nationality...

A birth must be registered by the father at the Population Registry Office of the district registry within 30 days (to not do so incurs a fine). If the father is unable to do this, the registration procedure can be handled by some one who attended the birth, or by the mother.

The following documents are required for registration:

  • Both parents residency or identity documents
  • Marriage certificate
  • Child's official birth certificate
  • Application form
  • Payment for registration fee

Naming a child

A child's name must be chosen in a joint decision by the parents. If agreement can't be reached, Turkish law gives the father the right to decide.

In the case of marriage between a Turkish citizen and a foreigner, a child may be given two names (Turkish and another).

Registration of birth at an embassy

Registration of children born to parents from abroad should be made at the relevant consular office of the embassy in Turkey. The child's birth certificate is required; passport application for the child can be completed at this point.

Citizenship

Every child born in Turkey, regardless of the parents' nationality, has the right to acquire Turkish citizenship.
