Contraception and Termination of Pregnancy/Abortion in Turkey

Abortion is legal in Turkey. It is available on request until the tenth week of pregnancy. After ten weeks, an abortion is permitted if the pregnant woman is suffering from a proven disease that could endanger her life or that of the foetus.

An abortion up to ten weeks is permitted for one of the following reasons:

  • To save the life of the pregnant woman
  • To preserve the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman
  • If the pregnancy is the result of rape or an act of incest
  • If the foetus is severely physically or mentally impaired
  • Economic or social reasons

Parental consent is required for minors under 18. Married women must have their partner's consent. Single women over the age of 18 may have an abortion on request.

By law an abortion may only be carried out by an obstetrician/gynaecologist and trained general practitioners. An abortion can take place at both private and public hospitals.

The abortion pill is not available in Turkey.

Cost

Abortion is generally not free of charge in Turkey. With the provisions of the General Health Law, it is possible have the operation free of charge in public hospitals if:

  • An abortion is necessary for medical reasons
  • The pregnant women is under 18, insured and not married

The Morning-after Pill

The morning-after pill (ertesi gün hapi) is available in Turkey and can be obtained over the counter at a pharmacy, without the need for a doctor's prescription. It should be taken as soon as possible and must be taken within five days after unprotected sex.

Family Planning in Turkey

Family planning associations are responsible for providing information on contraception and preventive health services. Contraceptive pills (do?um control hap?) are available on prescription from pharmacies. IUDs are the most frequently prescribed methods of contraception in Turkey.
