Istanbul Municipality’s Shelter Service

Many of Turkey’s towns and cities have a problem with stray cats and dogs, or street animals. Found animals are neutered and vaccinated by local authorities and must have a tattoo or a microchip in order to live freely in the street.

Many regional municipalities in Istanbul have Street Animal Care and Rehabilitation Centres. The aim of these centres is to meet the needs of unprotected street animals by providing care and housing.

In order to adopt a pet from these shelters the following documents are required:

  • Proof of address – a certificate of place of residence or water, gas, or electricity bill that has the address on it
  • Name and telephone number of two references

The shelters may be visited daily between 09:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:00.
