Registration of Birth in the United Kingdom

Find out how to register the birth of a newborn baby...

Parents must register their baby in the district where he or she was born within 42 days of the birth. The procedure may be done at the hospital before the mother goes home, or at the local register office.

For a married couple, either the mother or father can register the birth on their own. If the couple is not married, both parents can go and sign the birth register together. Alternatively, if one of the couple can not go, he or she will have to complete a statutory declaration form for the partner to take to the registrar.

If the father's details are not complete at birth, they can be added at a later date.

If neither the mother nor the father can register the birth, it can be done by the following people:

  • Occupier of the house or hospital where the child was born
  • A person present at the birth
  • Person who is responsible for the child

Once the birth has been registered a birth certificate is provided. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. In some areas appointments are required to register the birth.
