The UK by Bus and Coach

Getting around the United Kingdom by bus and coach...

Public transport in the UK is well developed with local bus services throughout the country. In Great Britain, bus services are generally privately owned. In Northern Ireland they are state-owned and operated by Translink. In the rest of the UK, bus services are not harmonised and making long or cross-country journeys can involve a change of routes and regional providers. There are some websites and apps that help to fill the gap:

  • Buschecker is an app for Android, iOS and Windows phone that gives real-time bus timetabling information and has comprehensive maps
  • Rome2Rio is a local and global journey planner with multi-transport options

Travel by coach is popular within the UK and a number of companies provide coach services. These include:

  • Greenline, which serves London and the Home Counties as well as Luton and Heathrow airports
  • Stagecoach
  • Megabus is a low-cost coach service providing inter city routes
  • National Express has a number of scheduled routes in the UK and Europe with several hundred destinations. The company also serves many UK airports
