According to Vietnamese law, the minimum legal age for drinking alcohol is 18.

Teenagers and Drugs

Illegal drug use among young people in Vietnam is now one of the Vietnamese government’s highest priorities in tackling its social problems. In August 2013 the government and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) signed an agreement initiating a national programme aimed at reducing drug use and drug-related crime in Vietnam by 2017.

Teenagers and Pregnancy

It is illegal for teenagers under 16 to have sex.

The contraceptive pill is available at Vietnamese pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription.

Abortion is legal in Vietnam and there is a high rate of abortion amongst teenagers. However, there is a draft amendment, which may come into effect in the near future limiting the situations under which an abortion can take place.

Women can get married when they are 18 and men when they are 20.

Teenagers and Driving

The minimum age in Vietnam for riding a motorbike is 16 and for driving a car is 18.

  • Teenagers over 16 years old can ride a motorbike with a capacity of less than 50cm3
  • Teenagers over 18 years old can drive a car with a nine-seat capacity
  • Youth over 24 years old can drive a car with a ten to 30 seat capacity
