HCMC has well established bus and ferry networks with plans being developed to introduce a sophisticated metro system over the next decade to make commuting easier.

Public Buses in Ho Chi Minh City

There are over 150 bus routes in Ho Chi Minh City that travel to all local districts, as well as some tourist destinations. Although inexpensive, the bus fleet is not of a high standard overall, but is being continuallyupgraded. When travelling by public bus, be sure to check the bus number, start and destination.

Bus routes are also indicated at bus stops, and maps of the bus routes are also provided at the Ben Thanh bus station.

Mien Dong Bus Terminal is the main departure point for travelling to Vung Tau, Phan Thiet-Mui Ne, Dalat, Nha Trang, Daklat and other destinations in the central highlands and the north. There are over 200 transport companies working from this terminal. Ho Chi Minh City Public buses also connect here.

Mien Tay Bus Station is the main departure point for travel to the Mekong Delta area, including Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Can Tho City, and Ca Mau.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased on boarding; exact change is not required. Alternatively, pre-paid tickets are available in booklets of 30; the price per booklet depends on the types of ticket purchased. There are two types of booklets available: for journeys under 18 Km, and for journeys over 18 Km. This works out cheaper than individual tickets and can be used on all journeys except bus numbers 13, 94, and 96.

Concessions are available for students on presentation of student ID, except on bus numbers 13, 94, and 96. Children under 130cm travel for free.

Boat Travel in Ho Chi Minh City

There is no Ho Chi Minh City internal public boat transfer system however, there are some transfers provided by commercial enterprises. These enterprises are mainly river front restaurants and entertainment places.

Hydrofoil to Vung Tau

Hydrofoil ferries cross the Saigon River from Ho Chi Minh City to the coastal city of Vung Tau several times daily. The trip takes about one and a half hours each way and follows a scenic route along the Saigon River. Unless planning to stay in Vung Tau overnight, always purchase a return ticket in order to get back to Ho Chi Minh City the same day. The last boat from Vung Tau leaves at 17:00. It may be necessary to buy tickets in advance, especially for weekends and public holidays.
