Medical Services

Information on finding a hospital, pharmacy or ambulance services in Vietnam…

Many public hospitals in Vietnam, particularly in rural provinces, are poorly equipped and underfunded, and doctors and medical staff in these hospitals will generally only speak Vietnamese. Many people living in outlying provinces, therefore, choose to travel to urban centres for any major treatment.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City each have at least one state-owned hospital that caters to foreigners, but they are generally quire crowded. Both cities now have private clinics and hospitals that employ local and foreign doctors. These locations provide everything from ambulance services to pre-natal care.

The contact number for ambulance emergency services in Vietnam is 115; however, those provided by public hospitals are often poorly equipped and response times may be slow. Private medical facilities in the larger cities also provide ambulance services, although in many situations it is better to use a taxi.

Pharmacies in the major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can be found in most shopping malls, they are generally well-stocked and it is possible to buy medicine over the counter without a prescription. These high-street pharmacies are not subject to stringent regulations, however, and it is advisable to read the expiry date on any medications bought.

Many of the private hospitals and clinics have a 24-hour pharmacy.
