Transport in Vietnam

Find out about the options for travelling to Vietnam and for getting around once you’re there…

Whether driving a car, riding a bike or using public transport, you’ll need to get around the towns and countryside of Vietnam. Here’s the information you need regarding the legalities and practicalities of doing just that.

By far the most popular mode of transport in Vietnam’s cities is the motorcycle. In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City motorcycles account for the majority of all road usage, with bicycles accounting for another significant number. Although vehicle ownership is rising very quickly, car ownership is still low and accounts for a relatively small amount of all road use in these two cities.

There has been significant investment in the construction of new paved roads in recent years which has resulted in an overall improvement in the condition of the main road network. The condition of rural roads remains poor, however.
