Inter-city coaches are a popular option for travelling long distances, and are usually large, air-conditioned, modern and comfortable. There is an extensive coach network which covers most of the country.

There is a programme of expansion and development planned for Vietnam’s rather outdated rail network. Overnight sleeper trains are a very popular way of travelling long distances.

There are regular domestic flights from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and other major towns such as Danang, Hai Phong, Can Tho, Hue and Nha Trang.

Local buses are cheap, although they are often very crowded and do not have air-conditioning.
