Foreigners Marrying an Indonesian Citizen in Indonesia
Marriage between an Indonesian citizen and a foreigner can be complicated because laws are applied unevenly across Indonesia and regions have different legal procedures. In urban areas such as Bali and Jakarta where many marriages involving foreigners take place, local officials generally uphold marriage law. In areas where fewer such marriages take place, foreigners should find out about local practices and contact local marriage authorities. It is strongly suggested that foreigners consult the Indonesian Embassy in their home country, or their consulate in Indonesia as early in the process as possible.
It is least complicated to get married in the residential area listed on the Indonesian partner's National Identification Card (Kartu Tanda Penduduk or KTP).
Before marrying, foreigners must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a valid visa
- Be single/unmarried: another marriage within or outside of Indonesia is not allowed
- Meet minimum age requirements (see below: Legal Requirements)
The foreigner may also need an Indonesian Police Certificate stating that they have never committed a crime.
