Golf and Life in Portugal

Useful and topical information about golf and life in Portugal, by Keith Barrett, a PGA Golf Professional who has lived and worked in the country since 1999.

Keith Barrett – PGA Professional

I grew up in Southport at the very heart of England’s Golf Coast, and started playing when I was nine years old after my father gave me a rusty, cut-down mashie niblick (7 iron) and a few tatty practice balls.

I joined Hillside Golf Club two years later and was a category one player by the age of fourteen. I competed in the British Boys Championship twice and was eventually selected to play for Lancashire Boys.

In 1979 I crossed over the Pennine Hills to study history and politics at the University of Hull and played regularly for the university golf team. After graduating with a Masters Degree in ’84 I moved to London and started working in marketing, event management and public relations.

Due to work commitments my golfing aspirations were placed on the back burner for several years, but by 1997 I’d had enough of city life and decided to fulfil a lifelong ambition by becoming a golf professional. I began my new career in Villars, Switzerland and then in late ’99 I moved to Portugal to take up the position of Head Professional at Belas Clube de Campo near Lisbon.

I met my wife, Mrs B, in 2001 and we tied the knot two years later. We live on the Estoril coast overlooking the sea and are frequently visited by my sun starved family from England.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to work and play in countries as diverse as South Africa, the Falkland Islands and, on a golf development mission for the R&A, Kazakhstan. But the best part of any trip abroad is returning home to sunny Portugal.

Since January 2014 I’ve been based at the Pestana Beloura Golf Club where I continue to teach my regular students and develop Golf Holiday Packages with hotels in the Cascais and Estoril area. In June 2014 I became a blogger for Angloinfo.

All the best.
