Hi are Turkeys for roasting at Christmas available easily in the supermarkets like Monoprix and Carrefour? or do they not stock them in which case a Butchers?,,,,,Im wondering whet the French have on Christmas day? Thanks
Traditionally, the French have roasted "chapon" for Christmas Day. From what my in-laws explained to me, it's a castrated rooster? You order them from your local butcher. I've never seen whole turkeys at the grocery stores. The few times we celebrated Thanksgiving, we also had to special order one from the local butcher shop.
Don't be afraid to try the chapon - it's delicious and I never missed the turkey!
Foie gras and smoked salmon also feature heavily at French Christmas (at least in my family).
