I am having my car mot shortly and just wondered what the tread depth has to be and what is the best way to accurately measure the depth
The required tread depth is 1.6 mm across the central ¾ of the tread and going around the complete circumference of the tyre and if you look carefully in the main grooves of the tread you should see little rubber 'bumps' every 20 cms or so.
These bumps are wear indicators, the idea of them being that when the tread wears down to the top of them the tread depth is then at the absolute minimum allowed, ie 1.6 mm.
But a point to bear in mind here Retired is that if the centre of the tread appears to be wearing more than the outer sections it could be because your tyre pressures are too high and conversely, if the outer sections of the tread appear to be wearing more than the centre your tyre pressures could be too low.
Thank you John for your concise and helpful reply
