OPEN GARDENS - Le Moulin de l'Âge, 86390

from May 2nd 2017 to Sep 30th 2017

Evergreen shrubs form the bones of the garden and are complimented by many varieties of herbaceous plants. Our latest project has been an area of woodland which we have cleared to expose a carpet of bluebells. We have introduced primroses, daffodils and hellebores and have been excited to find numerous wild anemones and natural woodland plants. We face the river Gartempe and have an area of riverbank which is for our private use so please bring your chairs and picnic and enjoy an alfresco lunch. Our aim is for a garden that has something of interest and colour all year round, however spring has to be the most impressive with daffodils, narcissi, primroses, hyacinths and numerous other spring bulbs. We have utilised the wettest area and have planted over 100 hostas which give us an impressive display during the summer months. There is also a woodland with mature oaks, hornbeams, cherry and birch trees. Natural springs provide welcome water in summer but, on the reverse side, bogs in winter. Our garden faces south east and on a considerable slope; this poses some management problems. When we started construction of the garden we were faced with 750 cubic metres of subsoil which had been excavated from the back of the house and deposited at the far end of the garden. This has evolved into an area of meandering paths around island beds.
