I have just received a tax bill for taxe d'habitation for the year 2020. I was the tenant/locataire in the flat on the 1st Jan 2020, but moved out of the country in February 2020. I stated as such on my tax declaration earlier in the year. Am I liable to pay the full amount or is there a way to avoid this?

Whoever inhabits the property on 1st January is liable to pay the tax, it canlt be avoided.

I'm afraid even if you just stayed until the 2nd Jan., you are liable for the Taxe Habitation and the Redevance Télé. for the full year.  It's the person who's living in the apart. / home on the 1st Jan. that needs to pay for the full year.

HI

do you mean you only stayed 1 month ie Jan 01 too Feb 01 year 2020 ?

If so and that is rental contract you can reclaim the tax from the tax office by LRAR, if you want to contact me privately let me know, I do charge for admin and advice
