Just a reminder that Darfur has not gone away and to draw attention to China's latest antic is to protest against the warrant issued for the arrest of the genocidally inclined president of Sudan. Regrettably most world leaders have 'gone to water' and decided to attend the Olympic games. Mammon rules KO!"It's not the destinationIt's the glory of the ride."

hello* Germs are most often spread by hands through person-to-person contact.* Germs can enter our bodies through the mouth, nose, eyes and breaks in the skin without our even knowing we've been infected.* Poor personal hygiene by food handlers is the second leading cause of food borne illness.* Americans spend about $5 billion each year on their colds _ about $3 billion on doctors' visits and $2 billion on treatments.* An estimated 60 million days of school and 50 million days of work are lost annually because of the common cold.* Some 5.5 million visits to doctors' offices each year are due to skin infections.* Germs can be transferred from inanimate surfaces to hands and vice-versa.* Some germs can live on dry surfaces (such as toys) for several hours and moist surfaces (like bathroom sinks) for up to three days.* Salmonella can survive freezing and can survive on dry surfaces for at least 24 hours.* The average kitchen dishcloth can contain 4 billion living germs.

I recently saw a news presentation on rubbish problems and in particular the effect plastic bags have on the environment and wildlife. The amount of waste and garbage that flows out into the sea is appalling. I saw an Albatross feeding its young - and plastic was being transferred from the mother's mouth into the young bird's mouth. Not a good start to life. Also dolphins who have died have been opened up for examination and plastic bags are wrapped around their organs. They do not deserve this type of treatment. This is their home not our dumping ground. There has to be a solution to this problem. Be it paper bags, boxes or the reuseable material bags now on offer at supermarkets. Plastic bags are way to easy to use. I am sure if there was a charge for plastic bags at the supermarket - maybe, just maybe - people might decide to buy the material bags. I know you still have to throw rubbish away in bags of some description and I have noticed there are now new green biodegradable bags at the supermarket. So maybe we are heading towards a cleaner and safer future. Who knows.

What do you all think about the demonstrations going on in Europe with regard to the Olympic Torch relay? Seems to me it is all too little too late. How come there wasn't more public lobbying when the IOC was deciding the venue? Don't quite understand how a country like China got the games to start with. Me thinks politics played a major role.... Athletes who have been training for years are not likely to throw away the chance to compete in the games. There may not be other games for them. So is the world going to boycott the games? Rogge has his work cut out for him I reckon, but I don't think he'll get anywhere fast with the Chinese.

Interesting to note that China does not approve of Kosovo's independence. Now I wonder why that might be?? I'll give you a clue. It begins with a 'T'. Will be interesting to observe Singapore's position on this.

Care to place a little bet? Will it be Obama or Clinton for the Democrats? Presuming McCain gets the party nomination for the Republicans, who'll be the candidate from the Democrats that will stand a better chance against McCain? I'd like Obama to have a go. Think the rest of the world might find it slightly easier to relate to someone like him... Any opinions?? Caren

Do you think the other Asean countries including Singapore are applying enough pressure on the thugs running Burma? I certainly don't. Regrettably self-interest rules.

What do you think of the 'outburst' of Juan Carlos towards Hugo Chavez during the Ibero-American talks? I think he was right. Chavez is an annoying little sh.. and he should have shut up and let old Aznar have his say. To call him a fascist was unfounded. Chavez still stuck in time, a few decades ago...! Do you think the King or the Spanish government should apologize? What will be the consequences, economically of course, if they don't? I wish Spain and Juan Carlos could just stick up the middle finger, but... Suz

I read in the paper today that Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders. I think that is fantastic news!! Give us some women with shape! Out with the waif-like, heroin-chic look. Such a misnomer by the way, should be heroin-sick!! Nothing wrong with an hour glass figure, who would have liked Marilyn Monroe as a stick figure like some of these models are sporting??? Come on designers, design for real women. If you are any good at what you do, you should be able to make any woman look good in your clothes!   Josephine

100 Million and thrown out of this years' competition is what McLaren have been fined for using confidential information on their competitors! Am I the only one who thinks this is completely insane? I hope they'll appeal and win it. Fine them by all accounts but within reason!!

What a shame to hear Luciano Pavarotti died at just over 70 today. He did so much for opera and had a fantastic voice. I'll miss it.

If you haven't already heard about this story, a small child, aged 4 was snatched from her bedroom, whilst on holiday with her parents in Portugal. Although unlikely anyone in Singapore can help, you never know, so thought it was worth posting. It is thought that the child has been abducted and taken out of Portugal, so could be anywhere. Here is Crimestoppers number in the UK for anyone who can help with the search for the British 4 year old little girl that went missing some days ago in Portugal. + 44 1883 731 336
