Help! My dog has fleas. How do I get rid of it? Thanks.
act as quickly as possible before further infestation!
spot-on treatments like revolution and frontline plus are considered safe and effective for dogs and are easy to apply. make sure you get the right one for your dog's size. however, because revolution is also a heartworm preventative and if he's just had a dose (or has one coming up), you might want to check with your vet first about when to administer it (although if that's the case, he should be relatively flea-free!). if he's younger than 6 weeks, you may also have to discuss other solutions with your vet.
spot-on treatments are always better alternatives to sprays because you don't coat the entire body of the animal with chemicals and never use flea collars cause they don't work (!) and can cause severe irritation and allergies to the skin and fur. also depending on how long your dog has had his little "friends", you may have to treat your environment as well- fleas can jump fairly far and take up residence in sofas, bedding, carpets, clothing, etc. that's when you start looking at sprays and flea bombs and fairly energetic vacuuming (remember to remove your dog first!).
for us, we go au naturale. my fur kids are all fed formulated raw diets and don't have flea problems (thank goodness! altho they used to years ago); they also seem to have fairly strong immunity to parasitic visitations (?), but i can't say definitively if that's because of their diet. in any case, they've never been healthier off commercial products and it might be another alternative to consider, although natural immunity takes time to build. we also use natural cleansers and repellents (if needed).
