tricky tenant

Hello. We have a French tenant in an annexe to our house. He has been there since January 2012. We gave him six months "notice to quit" 30/09/2015. I understand the difficulty in getting a tenant to leave before mid April. He wishes to stay citing the agreement has automatically renewed for three years after the contract finished January 2015.He has his own front door and private accommodation. The electric supply passes through our house but has a meter for his 'cottage'. He paid for the electricity and water for 3 and a half years, but nothing since last summer. Are we stuck with him?

I would beat the living daylights out of him and dump him miles away give the place a clean and deny any knowledge of him ever being there.

Yes, you're stuck with him is the rather more intelligent and right answer. You should have given him notice to quit at least six months before the end of the 3 year tenancy agreement or, as he quite rightly points out to you, it is automatically renewed by law even if neither you nor he have signed a tenancy renewal. So now you have to wait until July 2018 to give him notice (be precise on the date - it must be at least six months, ie 6 months + 1 day).
