Museums & Monuments: Leiden Area

Leiden offers a wide range of museums, including the Dutch national museum of ethnology and one of the largest natural history museums in Holland. You'll also find registered monuments and original windmills in the area which includes Katwijk, Noordwijk, Alphen aan den Rijn and Hillegom.

Windmill de Kikker
Leiden's smallest windmill, the "kikkermolen" (frog mill) was built in 1752 to help drain the Kikker Polder. The mill was restored in 1996. Oegstgeesterseweg, Leiden
Windmill de Put
Leiden windmill built in 1987 on the location where the original Molen de Put stood from 1619-1729. The mill is often open on Saturdays 11:00-16:00. Park de Put 11, 2312 BM Leiden
Museum Boerhaave
National Museum of the History of Science and Medicine has over 1600 historical objects in its permanent collection dating to the 16th century. The museum is CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS until NOVEMBER 2017. Agnietenstraat 10, Leiden
Museum de Zwarte Tulp
The Black Tulip museum illustrates the life cycle of bulbs and offers historical highlights of the bulb growing region. Group tours must be pre-booked by email. Open Tue to Sun 13:00-17:00 at Heereweg 219, 2161 BG Lisse.
Den Hartogh Ford Museum
Ford auto museum in Leiden area (Hillegom), featuring 210 vintage Ford cars from as far back as 1903. Open Wednesday to Sunday 11:00-17:00. Accessible by bus 50, 51 (Ford Museum). Haarlemmerstraat 36, 2181 HC Hillegom
Sieboldhuis
Dutch-Japanese museum located in the former house of 19th century Leiden resident, Phillip Franz von Siebold. The permanent exhibition includes the many pieces Siebold collected during trips to Japan from 1823-1830. Rapenburg 19, 2311 GE Leiden.
Museum de Lakenhal
Art and culture museum in Lakenhal since 1874. Featuring works by famous Leiden artists like Rembrandt plus silver, glass and tiles pieces. The museum is CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS until SPRING 2019. Oude-Singel 28-32, Leiden
Windmill De Geregtigheid
Katwijk conical stone windmill built in 1740 has monument status. The interior was damaged by fire in 1963 but restored 5 years later. The mill's grinding equipment was replaced in 2012. Valkenburgseweg 7, 2223KA Katwijk
Katwijk Lighthouse
Historic lighthouse in Katwijk is a registered monument. Built in 1605, it is the second oldest lighthouse still in existence in Netherlands). Visitors can climb the 14-meter high tower in July/Aug. Vuurbaakplein in Katwijk aan Zee
Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde
Leiden museum of ethnology offering collections from non-Western cultures, including Incan and Aztec sculptures, Chinese wall-paintings and Indonesian art. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:00 at Steenstraat 1, 2300 AE Leiden.
Rijksmuseum van Oudheden
Dutch National Museum of Antiquities housing one of the top Egyptian collections in the world. An archaeology of the Netherlands section. Open Tue to Sun 10:00-17:00 (open Mon during school holidays). Rapenburg 28, 2311 EW Leiden.
Naturalis

Pieterskerk
